Neurotransmitters: important roles in health and disease
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers in the nervous system responsible for transmitting information between neurons. The human body needs to maintain a balance of neurotransmitters to ensure good health. When the balance of these substances is disrupted, the brain and body may be over- or under-stimulated, leading to a range of neurological or psychological problems.
Neurotransmitters linked to mood disorders
The development of mood disorders often involves multiple neurotransmitters, and how they are balanced in the brain-gut axis and interact with systemic hormonal systems is critical. When neurotransmitter signals are properly balanced, the body is able to maintain a stable state; but if brain and peripheral neurochemistry become imbalanced, the body has difficulty reestablishing physiological integrity, which can lead to mental health issues.
